Safety in Ontario Parks

Every visit to Ontario Parks is an opportunity to explore. Forests, rivers, shorelines, and open spaces offer breathtaking experiences across all seasons.

When planning your trip, remember that outdoor conditions can vary by park, time of year, and activity.

Trip Planning

Visitors are responsible for planning their trips and making informed decisions. To make sure you have a safe and enjoyable trip, you should:

  • Choose activities that match your experience level.
  • Learn about the environmental hazards of your selected park, including wildlife.
  • Think about the risks involved in the activities you will be doing.
  • Check the weather forecast for the area local to the park.
  • Check for current park alerts by selecting your park from the “Parks” dropdown at the top of this page.

Thoughtful trip planning includes sharing your plan with a trusted contact. Tell someone where you plan to go and when you plan to return.

Remoteness and Access

Some areas of provincial parks are remote. Access to services, facilities, or help may be limited or delayed, particularly in the backcountry or less developed areas. Cell phone coverage may be unreliable. Travel times can be longer than expected. Changes in weather or conditions may affect routes or access. Visitors are encouraged not to rely on technology alone when planning for their trip.

In remote areas, help may take time to reach you. Plan ahead and be prepared to rely on your personal supplies. Visitors should stay flexible and be ready to make smart decisions based on changing conditions.

Equipment and Essentials

Bring the right gear for what you plan to do. Think about where you’re going, the season, and the expected weather conditions. Think broadly about what you will need to remain safe, comfortable, and prepared during your time at the park.

It’s also a good idea to practice using your gear before your trip. Knowing how the equipment works is as important as bringing it along.
